Fiery Crash off Highway 101 in Atascadero Kills One, Injures Three
ATASCADERO, CA (July 8, 2020) – On Sunday afternoon, a fiery crash off Highway 101 in Atascadero killed one person and injured three. The July 5 incident occurred on the northbound side of the highway.
The time was roughly 2:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say a vehicle–described as a Lexus G47–had been traveling on the highway, and in an area close to Del Rio Road, the accident occurred. According to reports, the driver may have veered abruptly to the shoulder on the right side of the freeway, and veered back toward the traffic lane.
The car went off the road surface, and rolled over on the grass slope. The car erupted in flames, and burned vegetation.
Reports say witnesses stopped at the accident site and helped the occupants escape before the car fully burned. Four people had been traveling in the vehicle.
The occupants were identified as Grant Cosko, a resident of Burlingame 20 years old. Cosko had been the driver at the time of the incident.
The passengers were identified as Adam Joss, a resident of Menlo Park, 20 years old; Carter Norton, a resident of Redwood City 20 years old; and Kyle Leventhal, a resident of San Mateo 20 years old.
Responders arrived and pronounced Kevin Leventhal deceased at the incident site.
Joss, Norton, and Cosko suffered injuries that were described as minor to moderate. Their current conditions are not known. Responders took them to Twin Cities Hospital.
Investigators are working to collect details and information to understand the incident’s circumstances and contributing factors.
