Suspect Fleeing Police in Stolen Truck in Ramona Strikes Vehicle Head-on
RAMONA, CA (May 5, 2020) – A driver who was fleeing Escondido police in a truck that was reported stolen crashed head-on into a car on Highway 78 in Ramona. The truck traveled off the road and fell into a ravine in the May 2 incident.
Reports say that at roughly 9:09 a.m., officers spotted the pickup truck–described as a Toyota Tacoma–which had been reported stolen from Riverside County, according to Chris Leso. Leso is an acting lieutenant with the Escondido Police.
Officers made a traffic stop on the vehicle on East Valley Parkway. While officers were engaged in the traffic stop, the passenger–identified only as a woman–ran from the truck. The driver–later identified as Matthew Ruiz, 26 years old–drove away with officers pursuing.
Ruiz fled on Highway 78, heading east in the direction of Ramona Grade. According to Leso, the pickup truck went out of Ruiz’s control in an area close to Indian Oaks Road. The pickup hit a barrier, and then crashed head-on into a car that was going westbound.
The pickup truck traveled off a steep edge, and fell roughly 50 feet into a ravine. The pickup truck erupted in flames. Ruiz is reported to have run from the truck.
Responders from CalFire extinguished the fire. Officers pursued Ruiz, and arrested him. According to reports, Ruiz suffered injuries that were described as minor.
Responders treated two people who had been traveling in the car that was struck by the pickup truck. The injuries they suffered were described as minor. The identities of the two victims have not been reported.
Investigators are working on collecting information and details regarding the incident.
