Man Struck and Killed in Sylmar While Volunteering at Food Distribution Event
SYLMAR, CA (April 20, 2020) – Arturo Franco Melendez was struck and killed by a vehicle on Friday night in Sylmar as he was working as a volunteer at a food distribution event. The April 17 incident occurred in the area of Glenoaks Boulevard and El Casco Street.
The time was roughly a little after 7:45 p.m., Los Angeles Police and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said.
Reports say Melendez had been helping to load food into a vehicle–which has not been described–when another vehicle–which has also not been described–hit him and pinned him between the two.
Responders arrived and transported Melendez to the hospital where he died. He was a resident of San Fernando, 58 years old.
The person who was driving the vehicle stayed at the incident site and cooperated with the investigation. The identity of the driver, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
Investigators are working to collect information to understand why the accident happened.
