Monrovia Crash Seriously Injures Two in Alleged Street-racing Incident
MONROVIA, CA (April 6, 2020) – Two drivers are suspected of street racing in the afternoon on Saturday in Monrovia, which resulted in a crash that seriously injured two people. The April 4 incident occurred on South Myrtle Avenue in the 1900 block, near Duarte Road and to the south of it.
The time was a little before 1:10 p.m., according to Monrovia Police.
Reports say that according to Daniel Verna, who is a lieutenant with Monrovia Police, a witness contacted authorities to say two vehicles—one described as a classic Mustang, and the other as a red vehicle, which may have been a Camaro—were alleged to have been racing on the street.
According to reports, both vehicles were traveling fast. At a point where the road curves, the Mustang went out of the driver’s control, and it went into the lane of opposing traffic. The Mustang smashed into an SUV.
The force of the collision broke the Mustang in two, and ejected the driver. The back end of the Mustang ended up next to a utility pole, and caught on fire. According to Verna, high-voltage wires came down, landing on the ground.
Responders transported the person who had been driving the Mustang to the hospital. The person suffered injuries that were described as life threatening. He was identified only as in his 30s; his name and city of residence have not been reported.
Responders also transported the person who had been driving the SUV to the hospital. The victim suffered injuries that were described as major. His identity, including name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.
According to Verna, the person who had been driving the Mustang may face charges that include felony street racing and reckless driving.
Crews from Southern California Edison arrived to fix the utility wires that were knocked down.
Investigators are searching for the second vehicle that was involved in the alleged street-racing incident, and its driver. If anyone has information about the incident, the person can call Monrovia Police. The number is 626-256-8000. Anonymous tips can also be made to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers. That number is 800-222-8477.
