Federal Lawsuit Filed Against Mother for San Diego DUI Crash That Injured Her Children
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 1, 2020) – On Friday, a lawsuit was filed in federal court in San Diego against a mother whose three children were injured during crash in which she was driving under the influence. Reports say the suit alleges negligence on the part of the children’s mother, three social workers, and San Diego County.
According to reports, the mother—identified as Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30 years old—had driven while drunk a number of times in which her children were traveling with her. On November 12, 2018, Gonzalez was involved in a head-on collision in which her children were injured, she was injured, and the driver of the other vehicle was injured.
Authorities found that Gonzalez had a blood-alcohol level that was more than three times the legal limit when the collision occurred. Gonzalez, reports say, pleaded guilty to DUI and felony child abuse. She was sentenced and is serving time in prison.
The federal lawsuit filed on Friday alleges that social workers from San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency were aware of Gonzalez’s DUI history, which reports say was documented back to 2009. The suit alleges the workers from the agency ignored the potential risk and exposed the children to serious threat and danger.
The lawsuit describes four times that Gonzalez had been driving drunk in which one or more of her children were passengers with her. Three of the incidents were collisions, which the lawsuit says the Health and Human Services Agency and/or law enforcement knew about.
