Car Crashes into West Hills Post Office, Two Injured

A car crashed into the West Hills post office’s front lobby right before 10 a.m. on Thursday, injuring at least one person and causing the office to close temporarily.
While attempting to park his four-door Buick sedan in front of the post office on Sherman Way, an elderly man failed to stop and mounted the curb, according to police. The car continued through the building’s glass entrance doors and hit a customer, officer Bobby Hammers of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic division said.
Hammers said “He possibly mistook the brake pedal for the gas pedal. It was an accident.”
Los “Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Maine said the customer whom he hit was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver was transported to the hospital as well in serious condition.
Luckily, there were only a few customers in the building at the time of the crash, and no postal service staff sustained any injuries.
Main added that the fire department requested a safety inspection of the building.
She said “They asked for the city’s Building and Safety Department to come out to check the structural stability of the building.”
Postmaster Carlos Perfino added that the inspector assessed the building’s front entryway, but the rest of the building was declared structurally sound.
The building, including post office boxes, had to be closed to customers during the inspection process, but postal employees continued to deliver mail in the area and pick up mail dropped in mailboxes on the property.
