Three Killed, 18 Injured When Charter Bus Overturns on I-15 in Pala Mesa
PALA MESA, CA (February 24, 2020) – Three People were killed and 18 were injured on Saturday when a charter bus overturned and crashed off of I-15 in Pala Mesa. The February 22 incident occurred in the northern part of San Diego County.
The time was roughly a little after 10:00 a.m., according to John Choi. Choi is a spokesperson with North County Fire Protection District.
Reports say the charter bus—which was based in El Monte—had been traveling on the road when it swerved and plunged down an embankment. According to reports, the road was slick with rain.
The bus came to a stop upside down. A number of people who had been on the bus were ejected from it during the crash, and one person was pinned beneath the bus.
The person who was trapped under the bus was killed. The identity of the person has not been reported.
Another victim who died was trapped inside the wrecked vehicle. According to Choi, the bus did not have seat belts.
Responders arrived and transported the victims to hospitals. The injuries the victims suffered were described as ranging from major to critical.
None of the people who had been aboard the bus have been identified in reports, including their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence. The people who had been aboard the bus—which was traveling from El Monte to San Ysidro—included children and adults.
According to Mark Latulippe, who is an officer, the person driving the bus suffered injuries that were described as minor. The bus driver stayed at the incident site. His identity has not been reported. The owner of the bus has also not been identified in reports.
Investigators are working to collect information and details to understand why the crash happened.
