Fuel Truck Crashed on I-5, Closing All Lanes

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, a fuel truck blew out a tire in a Glendale (2) Freeway connector tunnel on the Golden State (5) Freeway, closing all lanes.
The big rig was hauling upwards of 8,500 gallons of fuel when the tire blast caused it to crash into the side of the tunnel. It subsequently burst into flames upon impact, causing structural damage to the tunnel and the 5 Freeway.
According to officials, thousands of gallons of fuel went pouring into various storm drains and into the Los Angeles River.
Caltrans employees worked to repair the connector tunnel and the I-5 and Caltrans was able to open the northbound lanes around 11 p.m. on Monday. The southbound lanes of the 5 were cleared for cars around 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday. All lanes were reopened later on Tuesday.
The truck driver got away with only minor injuries.
The California Highway Patrol said the northbound Glendale (2) Freeway is closed indefinitely. Crews continue to work on repairing the tunnel, which is estimated to be closed for up to six months.
Patrick Chandler of Caltrans said “There’s a lot to be done and safety is our number one priority. As they go through erecting the steel and wood support structures, we should be able to open up more lanes.”
