Man Killed by Hit-and-run Driver in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, CA (December 19, 2019) – Tran Thanhminh was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Tuesday night in Oceanside. The December 17 incident occurred close to where Douglas Drive and Mission Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly a little after 10:15 p.m., according to Rick Davis. Davis is a sergeant with Oceanside Police.
Reports say Thanhminh had been walking home with his wife after leaving work at a restaurant in the vicinity. As he was walking across Mission Avenue, a vehicle—that is believed to have been involved in an earlier crash—hit him.
Thanhminh was pronounced deceased at the incident site, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said. He was 65 years old, and a resident of Oceanside.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded when the driver of a vehicle—described as a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck—had been traveling at a fast speed on Mission Avenue. The Chevrolet’s driver is alleged to have gone through a light that was red, and collided with another vehicle—described as a Ford-150—that was traveling on Douglas Drive.
Reports say that after the collision with the Ford, the person driving the Chevrolet put the pickup in reverse, and began traveling east on Mission Avenue. The Chevrolet’s driver is suspected of hitting Thanhminh where he was walking in the crosswalk, and dragging him down the street roughly 150 feet, according to Davis.
According to reports, the driver of the Chevrolet exited the vehicle in the area of Rancho Del Oro and fled on foot with a passenger who had also been in the Chevrolet.
After a search, authorities located the suspected driver and arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, and driving under the influence. He was identified as Wesley Stuart, 27 years old.
The driver of the Ford that was struck in the earlier collision has not been identified. It is not known if the driver was hurt, and if anyone had been a passenger in that vehicle.
Investigators are continuing their work to collect details, information, and evidence.
