Truck Carrying Diesel Crashes into Parked Vehicles, Fire Hydrants, and Utility Poles in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (August 9, 2019) – A truck that had been carrying diesel fuel crashed early in the morning on Friday close to Naval Base San Diego, causing damage and erupting in flames. The August 9 incident occurred in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego, on Main Street in the 3000 block.
The time was 1:45 a.m., San Diego Police said.
Reports say the truck went out of the driver’s control for reasons that are not known. The semi hit power poles and fire hydrants before sliding and smashing into vehicles that were parked on the street. The semi truck then erupted in flames and continued burning.
Power lines from the damaged power poles came down and went into water that was pooling from the hydrants that had been broken.
Responders arrived to transport the truck’s driver to a hospital. The types of injuries he suffered have not been reported, and his current condition is not known. The identity of the driver, including his name, age, and city of residence has not been reported.
Firefighters extinguished the fire. Crews from San Diego Gas & Electric turned off power in the area of the incident, and crews from the city’s water department shut off water that was shooting from the broken hydrants.
According to reports, roughly 4,200 customers were without power after the incident occurred. Investigators are working to gather information and details to understand why the crash occurred.
