Bicyclist Died in Accident with FedEx Truck in Fullerton

A bicyclist was killed in an accident with a FedEx delivery truck last Thursday in Fullerton. The accident occurred near a residential neighborhood. The bicyclist was 22-years-old.
Chelsea Kashergen was hit and killed around 2:15 p.m. The collision occurred in the middle of an intersection.
The FedEx driver was traveling northbound on Ladera Vista Drive and did not see the cyclist, who was riding eastbound on Nutwood Avenue, according to Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart.
It has been ruled an accidental death. The truck driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with officers trying to retrieve as much information about the accident as possible. Unfortunately, the cyclist had no room for a safe recovery when it was such a large vehicle that struck her.
However, some details did emerge that do not paint the picture of an accident that could have been prevented. The bicyclist appeared to have the right of way, but the investigation was ongoing, Stuart told City News Service.
At the scene, Stuart told NBC it was “too early to consider or determine what exactly is the cause of the accident.”
It is unclear whether or not the truck driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol or if that was a factor in the accident. The police did state that speed did not seem to be a mitigating factor or issue. They have pledged to continue investigating the accident, lest criminal matters crop up that should be addressed.
The family is hoping for privacy during this difficult and trying time. The truck driver has not been identified due to privacy laws and to make sure he is not implicated by angry friends, family or residents in the area.
Police are hoping that any witnesses will come forward to explain what they saw and to color the picture of how this accident came about and if the fatality could have been avoided.
