The grandmother of two of the victims of the horrible and fatal crash that occurred in Newport Beach on Memorial Day was able to track one of her granddaughters’ location through the GPS on her cellphone. She saw the teenager’s phone signal travel from hospitals to the coroner’s office.

Benilda Samps — whose granddaughters Robin Cabrera, 17 and Aurora Cabrera, 16, perished in the crash — didn’t realize at first what the tracking signal meant, CBSLA reported.

Five teens — Abdulrahman Alyahyan, 17, a senior at University High School; Robin Cabrera, 17, a senior at Irvine High School, and her sister Aurora, 16, a sophomore at the same school; Cecilia Zamora, 17; and Nozad Al Hamawendi, 17, both juniors at Irvine High School — died Monday when an Infiniti sedan driven by the supposedly unlicensed Alyahyan veered off a road in Newport Beach and hit a tree on Jamboree Road, which split in half and caught fire immediately, engulfing the car in flames as well.

DMV officials told the Associated Press that Alyahyan did not have a driver’s license or a learner’s permit.

Alyahyan applied for a license after his 16th birthday in 2012, but he didn’t provide required documentation proving his legal presence in the U.S. since he is an immigrant, said Jan Mendoza, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Alyahan tried again in February, after turning 17, and had his picture taken by the DMV but still did not provide the proper documents, she said.

His application was still pending when the crash occurred.

The grandmother, Samps, was unsure at first what the locations meant or the indicators were about, but once she realized the girls were a the Coroner’s office, she was sure something terrible had taken place. Of course, she was right, but the information and facts did not relieve her horror and pain at losing her two young grandchildren.

A memorial was held after the accident and during the schools’ respective graduations in June. Of course, parents, family and friends are still mourning the tremendous and unexpected losses.
