Suspect Fleeing Police Crashes in Santa Ana, Injuring Five People
SANTA ANA, CA (February 28, 2019) – A suspect who was fleeing police pursuit crashed early in the morning on Wednesday in Santa Ana, causing injuries. The February 27 accident occurred on Euclid Street.
Reports say that the incident began roughly at 4:10 a.m. when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle for code violations. The suspected driver—identified as Luis Enrique Ortiz, 31 years old and a resident of Whittier—would not stop and police began pursuing. According to Anthony Bertagna, who is a corporal with the Santa Ana Police Department, the pursuit headed west on 17th Street, traveling toward Garden Grove.
Reports say that during the pursuit, Ortiz drove through a red light and collided with a vehicle that had been heading south on North Euclid Street. The collision injured the person who had been driving the other vehicle. Three people who had been traveling as passengers were also injured, and it is not clear if they had been traveling in the suspect’s car. Ortiz was also injured.
Respondents took the driver of the other vehicle—identified as a woman in her 40s—to the hospital. Bertagna said she suffered injuries that included broken bones and trauma to her head. Her condition was described as critical. Her name and city of residence have not been reported. The type of vehicle she was driving has not been described. It is not clear if anyone had been traveling with her when the incident happened.
The types of injuries suffered by the passengers—identified as one female and two males—has not been described. The identities of the passengers, including their names, ages, and cities of residence have not been reported. The passengers may have been traveling in the suspect’s vehicle.
According to Santa Ana Police, drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle driven by the suspect. Ortiz had an outstanding felony warrant, police said, for a previous incident. In the earlier incident, he tried to evade police in a vehicle he was driving with a license that was expired.
Investigators are continuing their examination of the details of the incident.
