Woman and Three Children Injured in Collision Involving Street-racing Suspects in Garden Grove
GARDEN GROVE, CA (February 26, 2019) – A woman and three children were injured in an incident in which two drivers are suspected of street racing in Garden Grove on Sunday night. The February 24 accident occurred where Garden Grove Boulevard and Ninth Street intersect.
The time was roughly 8:00 p.m.
Reports say Garden Grove Police suspect two drivers were racing each other—based on later witness reports—which resulted in a collision involving three vehicles. According to reports, Robert Gonzales—28 years old and a resident of Anaheim—had been driving a 2009 Mercedes. Eric Benitez—24 years old and a resident of Costa Mesa—had been driving a 2017 Dodge Charger. The two were allegedly racing when they collided.
A third vehicle involved in the collision has not been described. The person driving that vehicle was identified as a woman, who was accompanied by three children. Respondents took the victims to the hospital. The identities of the victims—including their names, ages, and cities of residence—have not been reported. It is not known what injuries they suffered, or their current condition.
According to police, Gonzales tried to flee the accident scene on foot. Police say that when officers pursued Gonzales, he allegedly attempted to get rid of a big bag of narcotics by throwing it away. Police say that Gonzales began to fight with the pursuing officers, with one of the officers receiving abrasions and a minor injury to the head.
Police arrested Gonzales on suspicion of street racing, possession or transportation for sale of narcotics, resisting arrest, and probation violation. Police arrested Benitez, who is also suspected of street racing. The investigation is continuing.
