Hit-and-run Crash Kills Grandmother, Injures Two Kids Walking Near Elementary School in La Mirada

LA MIRADA, CA (February 21, 2019) – A grandmother was killed by a hit-and-run driver, and her two grandchildren were injured in the afternoon on Wednesday as they walked home from school. The February 20 accident occurred on Escalona Road in the 14800 block, close to Escalona Elementary School.

The time was roughly 1:25 p.m., according to Trina Schrader. Schrader is a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to investigators, the grandmother and her grandson and granddaughter had been walking on the road’s east side. They were walking in the gutter because there are no sidewalks. A sedan, that had been heading in the same direction was the trio, hit them.

Respondents took the grandmother to the hospital, where she died. The grandmother’s name has not been reported. Schrader said the two children were also taken to the hospital. It is not clear from reports what kinds of injuries the children suffered, or their current condition. The children were identified as age 6 and 9.

Reports say that the woman’s husband arrived at the accident site after his daughter called him. The man—identified as Juan Chavarria—said he and his family lived near the accident scene, and that he often accompanied his wife when they picked the grandchildren up from school.

Authorities described the suspect hit-and-run driver as male. The vehicle was described as a Toyota Camry, 2015-2017, four-door, and dark gray in color. The vehicle has damage on the right side and front, Schrader said.

Investigators are continuing to examine the incident.
