Horse Wandering on Road in Jurupa Valley is Struck and Injured by Car; Euthanized by Officer
JURUPA VALLEY, CA (January 23, 2019) – A horse who was wandering on a busy road in Jurupa Valley was struck and injured by a car on Tuesday afternoon. The January 22 accident led to the horse being euthanized by an officer.
The time was roughly a little after 1:00 p.m.
The horse—who was identified as a 10-year-old bay Quarter Horse gelding—was wandering on Etiwanda Avenue in a busy section close to where Jurupa Road intersects, and a car hit him, Riverside County Animal Services said. According to officials, the horse was alone, without a saddle. The horse had been dragging a rope which was attached to a branch. Reports say the branch showed it was freshly broken. According to Animal Services, the horse may have been tied to a bush or tree before the branch broke, freeing him to wander.
Deputies arrived at the accident scene and found that the horse had suffered extensive injuries. He had struck the windshield of the car, and his right front leg was injured. James Huffman, who is a lieutenant, said the horse was not moving one leg and was not bearing weight on it. According to Huffman, it was apparent the horse was suffering. The deputies decided to euthanize him.
Animal Services said the officers first cleared people from the street before Huffman used his firearm to euthanize the horse. Reports say he shot the horse to more quickly end the animal’s suffering, rather than waiting for chemical euthanasia to be administered.
The person who had been driving the vehicle that hit the horse suffered injuries that were described as minor. No other injuries to people were reported.
