Mark Stephen Keller Smashes Vehicle in Santa Ana; Is Hit and Killed While Walking Away from Scene
SANTA ANA, CA (December 28, 2018) – Mark Stephen Keller, who police suspect was driving under the influence on Sunday morning in Santa Ana and smashed into a tree, was hit and killed by a vehicle as he walked away from the scene. The December 23 accident occurred close to Flower Street and 1st Street.
The time was roughly a little before 6:00 a.m.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, Keller—who is alleged to have been driving under the influence of a drug that has not been named—crashed into a tree located in the center median.
Police received reports of the crash, and were told by callers that occupants of the vehicle had exited and were leaving the scene on foot, heading west on 1st Street. Officers arrived on scene, and found two people—both male—lying in a road close to the accident scene. According to police, one of the victims was not conscious and had suffered trauma to his head.
The two injured people were later found to have been occupants of the vehicle that crashed the tree. The person who had been driving the vehicle that hit the victims who were walking away from the earlier accident stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The person that police believe had been driving the vehicle in the first crash was identified as Keller, a 40 year old. Keller died from his injuries three days after the accident, according to police.
Authorities think that Keller and a person who had been traveling as a passenger exited the vehicle after it smashed into the tree. They then walked across 1st Street, heading south in the crosswalk at Flower Street. According to police, both victims were hit by a vehicle traveling west as they were walking across 1st Street.
The identity of the person who had been traveling in the vehicle with Keller has not yet been reported, including the person’s name, age, and city of residence.
The identity of the driver who struck the two victims, the driver’s name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported.
