A big rig accident on eastbound I-10 left one dead and others in the hospital Friday morning near Monroe Street in Indio.
The big rig driver swerved left to avoid hitting the big rig in front which suddenly stopped. It rear ended a Dodge vehicle on the lane
left to it then continued on to side swipe a Jaguar until finally striking the medianwall and rolling on its side, jackknifed.
The Dodge driver was pronounced dead on the scene, he was wearing his seatbelt. The big rig driver and one other involved in the collision suffered moderate injuries and were sent to the hospital. The drivers of the Jaguar were uninjured.
Riverside County Animal Control rescued a dog from the scene. The dog is a 5-year old Collie mix belonging to the owner of the big rig driver. She will be under the care of Coachella Valley Animal Campus until the driver recovers from the crash.
All eastbound lanes were blocked by the jackknifed big rig. Hazmat removed gasoline and oil spillage while cleanup crews worked diligently to clear the scene. The I-10 was re-opened three hours later.
The accident remains under investigation.
