Redondo Beach Crash Involving Six Cars Kills One Person, Injures Seven Others
REDONDO BEACH, CA (November 23, 2018) – A crash in the afternoon on Wednesday in Redondo Beach involving six vehicles killed one person and injured seven others. The time was roughly 2:50 p.m.
Reports say that a person—identified as a man in his 50s—had been driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV, and ran through a light had already been red for some interval. The driver had already struck a few trees while he was traveling westbound on Torrance Boulevard prior to arriving at the Pacific Coast Highway intersection. The driver ran the red light, and hit several vehicles.
The driver of the SUV struck five vehicles that had been traveling in both directions on Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Highway 1. According to reports, a witness recorded cellphone video of bystanders trying to help seven victims who were injured.
One witness told reporters that she did not hear a skid, but one big explosion. Another person said he witnessed the Mercedes erupt in flames. He said he ran to a store to grab a fire extinguisher, and that multiple fire extinguishers were used. The vehicle flamed up several times, he said. The witness said he and other bystanders dragged the driver from the car that was on fire. The witness said the driver couldn’t speak, and that the driver was bleeding.
Another witness said he tried to rescue victims, two of whom were an infant and a mother. Respondents arrived on scene and took the victims to the hospital. Four people suffered injuries that were described as critical. Three suffered injuries were that described as minor.
The person who had been driving the SUV was also transported to the hospital. He died from his injuries.
Reports say four vehicles involved in the crash had significant damage: a small hatchback, two sedans, and the Mercedes-Benz SUV. Investigators are examining the details and information.
