Collisions in Costa Mesa and Irvine on I-405 Kill Three Motorcyclists
COSTA MESA, CA (November 6, 2018) – Collisions in Irvine and Costa Mesa on the I-405 Freeway killed three motorcyclists in separate incidents on Friday. The November 2 crashes occurred in the morning hours, during the commute.
At roughly 5:35 a.m., the first crash occurred in Costa Mesa, close to the off-ramp for Harbor Boulevard from I-405 Freeway’s northbound lanes. A vehicle—described as a semi truck—had been exiting the freeway to the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp. A motorcycle—described as a 2017 Kawasaki—had been following the truck, and smashed into the truck’s rear end. Florentino Olivera, who is an officer with the California Highway Patrol, said the reasons the motorcycle hit the truck are not known.
The impact threw the motorcyclist—identified as a man 33 years old and a resident of Stanton—from the bike. A vehicle—described as a Hyundai sedan—ran over him.
Two other people who were riding motorcycles were killed on the I-405 Freeway roughly two hours afterwards. The later accidents occurred in the southbound lanes of the freeway, close to the Irvine Spectrum in Irvine.
For reasons that are not known, a rider who had been traveling in the carpool lane swerved into the guardrail that separates the carpool lane from the rest of the freeway’s lanes, according to Olivera.
The impact threw the rider—identified as a man 51 years old and a resident of Los Angeles—from the motorcycle. A vehicle—described as a Volkswagen Jetta—hit him. He died at the accident scene.
A person who had been driving a pickup truck stopped behind the Jetta that was sitting in the carpool lane. The truck’s driver parked, and then started to direct traffic away from the accident and into the freeway’s other lanes. A second person riding a motorcycle rode around the vehicles that were being directed away from the accident site, and remained in the carpool lane. The rider quickly increased speed and smashed into the rear of the pickup truck. According to Olivera, the impact from the crash killed the rider.
No other details have been reported about the crashes.
