Van Hits Tree in Dana Point, Injuring Nine Children

DANA POINT, CA (October 4, 2018) – A van struck a tree Wednesday afternoon in Dana Point, injuring nine children. Five of the children were seriously injured.

The October 3 accident occurred close to the intersection of Cove Road and Dana Point Harbor Drive, Tony Bommarito said. Bommarito is a captain with the Orange County Fire Authority.

The time of the accident was roughly 3:19 p.m.

According to Bommartio, five of the children who had been traveling in the van—ranging in age from 9 to 12—suffered trauma that was serious. Responders took the victims to Mission Medical Center. Reports say that four other children suffered minor injuries and did not want treatment. The driver also declined treatment.

Reports say that none of the injuries were life threatening. According to Margie Sheehan, Dana Point Police Chief, the van had been heading to Baby Beach for an outing after school.

People who witnessed the incident said the van was traveling down Cove Road, which is winding and steep, and its brakes seemed to have failed. People witnessed the driver veer back and forth as the van traveled down the road to try to slow the vehicle down before it crashed into the tree.

A witness said the driver was trying to keep the van on the road as it went down the hill. The witness said the driver was honking the horn.

Reports say that people tried to comfort the driver after the crash, as she was anxious for a period of time afterwards.
