Suspected Hit-and-run Driver arrested After Man is Hit and Killed in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, CA (September 10, 2018) – A man who had been walking in the street was hit and killed in Long Beach on Saturday by a driver suspected of hit and run, according to police.
Victor Salvador Herrera, a 40-year-old resident of Long Beach, was identified as the victim.
The accident occurred in the vicinity of Orange Avenue and Market Street at roughly 11:00 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Reports say that the victim had been walking on the road in the vicinity of Orange Avenue and Market Street, and witnesses saw him standing in the median in the center of the road. He was arguing with a man who was driving a car, described as a red sedan, a statement from police said.
The two men continued arguing, and then the driver suspected of hit-and-run struck the victim where he was standing in the center median, and ran over him.
The suspect then fled the scene, traveling on Market Street and heading west. Responders took Herrera to a hospital. Herrera died from his injuries.
Officers said that soon after the accident, they saw a driver who seemed to be intoxicated, in the vicinity of Willow Street and Temple Aveue. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle crashed into a car that was parked on the street near Obispo Avenue and 10th Street. Officers took the suspect into custody.
The vehicle that crashed the car parked on the street was the vehicle that also hit Herrera, police discovered.
Police book the driver—identified as Sokhorn Hor, a 29-year-old resident of Long Beach—on suspicion of murder. Hor is being held at the city jail in Long Beach, with bail set at $2 million.
