Man Dies in Fiery Collision on 101 Fwy in Hollywood

California Highway Patrol is investigating whether a man who was killed in a fiery collision on the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway was connected to a hit-and-run crash that was reported in the area Monday morning, May 7th. According to CHP Officer Millin Mateo, at approximately 2:05 a.m. the driver of a white Ford Fusion lost control while traveling northbound on the 101 freeway near the Santa Monica Boulevard exits and collided into a concrete retaining wall as the Ford Fusion veered off the road going up onto an embankment. The vehicle caught fire shortly after impact. Witnesses and bystanders said they couldn’t do anything to try and help rescue the victim, who was trapped inside the burning vehicle. Los Angeles Fire and Rescue crews rushed to the scene and pronounced the driver dead upon arrival.
Authorities believe that the fiery collision was a result of the driver fleeing from a hit-and-run which occurred in the east Hollywood area just before the fatal crash. The Ford Fusion had reportedly struck another vehicle, whose driver was following and watched the fatal crash happen according to Officer Mateo. Officials said the driver was the only person in the car at the time of the crash although a witness said that a 2nd person had gotten out of the wrecked Ford Fusion prior to it catching flames but authorities later said they could not corroborate the witness’ accusation.
CHP issued a SigAlert shortly after 2:30 a.m. which shut down all lanes of the northbound 101 freeway. Motorists were rerouted past the crash site as Caltrans crews worked to clear the wreckage and debris. All lanes were reopened by 6:00 a.m. just in time for rush hour traffic.
