Utah’s Canyon Arch Kills A Risk-Taking Rope Swinger

Posted on March 26, 2013

A 22-year-old man has died doing a stunt on the world’s largest rope swing. The rope swing is in Utah and stands at 110 feet. The sandstone arch is swung through by daring individuals who seek out the adventure of this famous landmark.  It is called Corona Arch and is located near Moab.

Kyle Lee Stocking, who is from east Jordan, used too much rope and was sent flying through and crashed into the base of the arch. He died Sunday afternoon.

His friends had reportedly miscalculated the distance through the arch and left too much rope clipped into Stocking’s waist harness.  The accident did not occur because of a lack of correct safety measures or lack of experience and knowledge. Everything was correctly hooked up for Stocking.

There have been numerous videos posted and 18 million views of some of this swinging. The activity is gaining in popularity and access. People enjoy watching the videos, but it also inspires them to become more adventurous and daring in their own lives. However, the makers of such videos lament that they are not hoping to see copycats and want people to understand the inherent risks involved in such activities before taking part.

Pendulum swinging is the form used to swing between a slot canyon such as the Corona Arch. It is a new form of recreation for Utah’s active population. Although rock climbing, base jumping and other activities in the canyon lands of Utah can cause serious injuries and even death, this new type of outdoor recreation is not going anywhere.

Corona Arch is on Utah state trust lands but is set to be turned over to a federal land-management agency as part of a larger trade of state and federal lands. The Utah Trust Lands Administration tried to stop the growing commercial presence in regards to jumping of any kind, but the agency is not allowed to ban private parties from using the lands. There are numerous warnings posted to dissuade potential victims, but the experience seems to be too tempting for many.
