Posted on April 10, 2013

At least 27 people are hurt and one person is dead after a train was derailed in Tamil Nadu, India. The accident occurred on Wednesday and affected a train that had 24 cars and was traveling from Bihar to the southern state of Karnataka. No one was seriously injured, but not much is known about the victims’ conditions.

Scores Injured In Train Accident

The cause of the accident is currently unknown. One source, that refused to give his or her name due to not having authorization to leak information to the media, stated that there was probably a technical issue that derailed half of the coaches of the train. Apparently, according to a survivor, the train made a loud noise before starting to reverse when the accident took place.

It happened around 6 a.m. near the Arakkonam junction. It was supposed to arrive in Yesvantpur before noon. Blue train cars could be seen lying sideways all over the track after the accident. Rescue workers struggled in helmets and orange jackets to dig through the rubble and broken windows to find survivors and evidence.

All of the victims should be compensated by the train company for their medical costs. The train station is open but the track at Sitheri station will be closed until Thursday morning, at least.  Several trips are going to be delayed or cancelled due to the accident. Everyone is working hard to fix the track and scene of the accident.

Indians use the Railways Network exclusively to shuttle from work. It is one of the largest networks in the world and employs almost one million workers in India.
