43-year-old Yousef Adhami of Gardena is currently fighting his condition in an area hospital. He is listed in grave condition. Olivia Gamboa, 47-years-old, died in the accident and she was the driver of the Metro bus that the tow truck collided with in the middle of the intersection in the jewelry district of the busy downtown area.

In order to tow a vehicle commercially in California, a driver must have a commercial driver’s license, a tow truck certificate, and a motor carrier permit. Adhami did not have a tow truck certificate and his motor carrier permit had expired, according to Artemio Armenta, a spokesperson for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Adhami only had a Class C license, which is never intended for commercial use.

No other passengers were in either vehicle at the time of the accident, but along with the fatality of Gamboa, a store clerk from the 7-Eleven that was impacted by the collision was slightly injured. The accident occurred around 5 a.m. and was caused by Adhami going 60 mph in a 30 mph zone on Broadway. He ran a red light and smashed into the Metro bus Gamboa was driving and then ran off course and struck the front of a 7-Eleven store while the bus was pushed into a sidewalk and knocked over a fire hydrant that sprayed water into the air.

Gamboa was found face down in the water of said hydrant. As she was being transported to the hospital, she passed away.

A memorial was placed at the scene of the accident as the family plans a larger memorial service and funeral for the long-time bus driver. No other details have been given about her death or the condition of the tow truck driver. It is unclear whether criminal charges will be filed in this case.
