Street Racing Accident Cost a Woman Her Life in South Gate This Week

Posted on June 12, 2013

One woman was killed and six other people were injured in a street racing accident in South Gate just after midnight. The California Highway Patrol said the driver, 20-years-old, was safe and was going to jail for several offenses. The highest offense would be vehicular manslaughter due to the fatality he incurred during this accident.

Michael Villalobos was driving a 2003 Acura and he was at the intersection of Alameda Street and Firestone Boulevard when the crash happened. He was racing and decided to run the red light at said intersection.

One of the impacted vehicles was a 1997 Honda that was being driven by a 24-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital shortly after being transported there for medical care and attention. Her next of kin has not been notified yet, so the name is not being released to the public or media until that is done.

The other impacted vehicle was a 2008 Honda that was being driven by a 50-year-old South Gate woman who was seriously injured and is currently being treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Two passengers in her car were also injured. They were teenagers and could possibly be her children. They only sustained minor injuries.

The driver, Villalobos, was taken to USC Medical Center in the county and has sustained moderate to minor injuries from the crash. His two passengers were young males and were slightly injured and taken to UCLA Harbor Medical Center for treatment.

Villolobos was later arrested. He was booked for alleged street racing, reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter, said CHP Officer Monica Posada.

There was no information about the car or cars that Villalobos may have been racing just before the accident. The accident is under investigation to find the reasoning behind the racing, the other culprits in the street-racing misadventure and whether or not other issues affected the driver during this ride and subsequent crash.

Officials said alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash. They have apparently tested Villalobos for any toxicity or drugs in his system.

CHP officers asked anyone with information to call the CHP’s South L.A. office at (310) 516-3355.
