SF Hybrid Taxi Thief Fail

Posted on June 1, 2012

With a simple hail, a taxi cab can swiftly transport people around towns, cities, and communities. Perhaps the most nationally recognized taxi cabs are New York’s cabs pained in the iconic yellow with black checkers. Although a cabs fare costs more than most local public transportation, the convenience that comes from riding a cab is worth paying the fare. A cab does not waste time picking and dropping other people off at every street nor does it risk transporting complete strangers, it caters to you. You are taken to your location; pay the fare and the cab drives off with your money – cash usually. Knowing that the cab driver carries cash seems to grab the attention of thieves looking to make a quick score.

Cab drivers are used to driving many types of characters around town – from nice to nuts. When business is slow they have the reputation for being artful when it comes to treating customers and making a few extra dollars. Cost per cab ride usually is determined by a meter on board. The meter measures the distance traveled and aggregates the cab’s cost per mile or 1/5 of mile which largely varies per location. Therefore, it is usually in the interest of the cab driver to cover more distance in order to make more money. Using cunning stories or knowing that the customer is not familiar with the area, the cabbie usually drives an extra block or so. With agreeable service, customers usually tip with cash as well after paying for the fare. Hands down, cab drivers can usually outsmart most – even when they are being robbed.

Cab drivers are also known for their aggressive driving style. It bewilders most when they realize that they had somehow escaped a car accident. Sometimes accidents do happen and it would be handy to contact a car accident lawyer. When accidents happen people can get hurt or have damage to their personal belongings, in many instances deserving compensation. Which is why apart from carrying change, most cab drivers also carry insurance – which is less appealing to a thief.

Cabs have gone a long way from looking like the iconic New York checkered styles. The city of San Francisco alone has various styles, including “green” taxis to help conserve the environment. Those taxis are usually Hybrids. They save the cab driver gas money which means less for the gas pumps and more in the cab drivers pockets.

Realizing this, a man in San Francisco hailed down a taxi for a ride near the Golden Gate Bridge. The cab driver ran the meter and coming close to their destination, instead of paying for the fare, the man accosted the cab driver, asked for all his money, stole his watch and forced him out of the cab. The thief then attempted to hijack the taxi with no avail – the crook was unfamiliar with how to turn on a Hybrid.

He asked the taxi driver how to turn it on, which he responded that the vehicle was already running then he ran and called the police. When authorities arrived, they saw the car san robber. It was in the convenience of many that the robber did not take the cab. He couldn’t have had the same skills to maneuver a taxi through SF injuring other individuals along the way. Those individuals would then have to contact a San Francisco car accident lawyer to help them get the compensation they deserve.
