Russian Meteorite has Caused Over 1200 Injuries

Posted on February 16, 2013

A meteorite struck the Russian city of Chelyabinsk today. A huge meteor broke into pieces in the sky and one landed in the middle of the city. Over 1,200 people have been injured in the blast and crash.

There are 204 children included in that number. Only a few people have been taken to the hospital for serious issues. Not every injured person was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Most were not injured enough to warrant that.

There was a blinding flash before the immense crash that shattered glass and hurled rocks everywhere. The impact caused collapses, loud noise and broken cars. The debris and damage hit even Kazakhstan and other neighboring areas. It mostly affected a lake named Chebarkul.

According to NASA, the meteor was not related to the asteroid that has said to be close to Earth’s orbit and should pass us by later on today.

Since the force of the meteorite hitting the earth was so intense, glass was obliterated everywhere and offices and schools could not go on with the day in the freezing cold temperatures without some sort of protection from the outside elements. However, no nuclear plants or electricity and water were affected by the incident.
