Polluting Plant near School Closed after 8-Year Battle

Posted on December 20, 2011

Activists celebrated the closing of a metal-finishing plant that they claim polluted their South Los Angeles neighborhood. The plant is located directly across the street from the 28th Street Elementary School.

Community activists read the names of the children and teachers from the school who had died because of toxic poisoning from the plant.

According to city officials, the World-War II era plant will not try to relocate.

A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge approved the settlement in a civil lawsuit against the plant on November 2nd. The lawsuit claimed that Palace Plating, the owners of the plant, violated environmental regulations by releasing contaminants into the sewer system. The plant agreed to stop all operations by December 31st, remove all hazardous waste and pay the Los Angeles School District $750,000 in restitution.
