While driving under the influence is looked down upon and highly regarded as negligent and careless, being intoxicated while at work—much less as a driver for a school bus—may just about top the list of no-nos. A woman was killed on Wednesday, Sept. 26 when a bus driver ran over and killed an elderly lady.

With 11 students aboard the school bus, a driver in Ventura ran over an elderly lady while on Brookshire Avenue and Woodland Street. She was driving on her regular route and was arrested after the incident. Police suspected that she had been drinking. Neither the bus driver nor any of the 11 students received any personal injuries. However, this wrongful death accident may prove to be traumatic to the elementary students on board.

The victim of the incident, a 65-year old lady had just left a nearby store and heading back home to her husband. While walking, the 54-year old bus driver made a left turn onto Woodland Street and slammed into the elderly woman in the crosswalk. The lady was pronounced dead on the scene from serious head and facial injuries.

When authorities came, the bus driver gave her a field sobriety test which she failed. She was then taken to Ventura County Jail for a DUI charge causing personal injury and vehicle manslaughter. They also found drugs in her system at the time of the collision. She has been released on bail.

The lady killed had been travelling home to see her husband. They had been married for 56 years. Her husband said his wife had made that walk hundreds of times. Her neighbors only had kind things to say about the woman.

Ventura County Unified School District told news reporters that the bus driver has been put on administrative leave while waiting on the outcome of the police investigation. The district has claimed that they perform random drug tests on all the bus drivers and so far none of them had ever failed the test.
