Diabetic Reaction Causes Man to Drive Wrong Way on PCH

Posted on February 21, 2012

A man was saved by his two young daughters after a medical reaction caused by his diabetes made him drive the wrong-way on the Pacific Coast Highway on Monday.

Authorities responded to several calls from concerned motorists at about 4:30 p.m. that indicated that a Volkswagen was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on PCH.

The driver, a 46-year-old man from Dana Point, was traveling with his two young daughters in the car – aged 5 and 7 years old – and was suffering from a diabetic reaction.

The 7-year-old girl took her father’s cellphone and called 911. She also safely steered the car off the side of the road to wait for assistance.

Authorities describe her actions as “heroic” and say that she responded calmly to all of their questions.

The vehicle was found stopped on the wrong side of PCH at the corner of Copper Lantern Street in Dan Point.
