Tulare, CA — A crash on Highway 99 ended the life of three people and critically injured three Saturday night.
A 1991 Mazda was traveling at high velocity north, half way between Bakersfield and Fresno, on Highway 99 when the vehicle lost control around 11:48 p.m. It veered onto the freeway shoulder and crashed into a tree near Tulare south of Avenue 264.
The crash killed the 18-year old driver and two passengers, a female, 19-years old, and a male 22-years old. The driver was the only person in the vehicle wearing a seatbelt.
Rescuers found two other passengers on the highway shoulder who were ejected from the vehicle on impact and extricated a third who was trapped in the vehicle. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are in critical condition.
Highway police have determined alcohol intoxication may have been a factor in the crash. The names of the victims will not be disclosed until family members are notified of their deaths. The accident is still undergoing investigation.
