A vehicle, driven by a 19-year old California Berkley student hit the 40-foot tree first. His car spun off the road where it stopped after hitting the median wall. He and his passengers then walked out to the highway shoulder. Shortly after, an oncoming truck hit the tree.

The truck went airborne, landed, lost control and hit the college student. The college student died on impact. The four other passengers and the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and were treated on the spot.

Highway 13 south of Park Boulevard, where the accident occurred remained closed until the tree was removed. A Caltrans crew was able to remove the tree. The tree was apparently uprooted by the week’s heavy rainfalls in Oakland Hills – the most rain they have had all season.

According to his father, the student killed was an excelling individual aspiring to be a physician who wanted to contribute to society as a whole.

Highway patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
