Tanker in Trouble It's not every day you see an overturned fuel tanker especially in the middle of a grass field. As part of a recovery demonstration at the Belvoir Steam and Country Fair this fuel tanker was subjected to many roll over and rescue scenarios. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A double trailer fuel tanker and a sedan were heading westbound on Ventura Freeway 134 underneath the Interstate 5 transition when they collided at about 11:00 p.m. The driver of the sedan, allegedly drunk, hit the rear trailer causing it to flip over on its side. Sparks from the impact caused the fuel to ignite. Each tanker contained about 6,000 gallons of fuel.

It took 150 firefighters and two helicopters to battle the fire with water and firefighter foam. For nearly four hours, the tanker burned and burning fuel flooded the freeways sewers.

Both vehicles were inspected thoroughly and no victims were found. All parties were able to evacuate the scene safely; the tanker driver, the driver of the sedan and his girlfriend.

Hazmat crews and structural engineers also worked on the scene of the crash. The highway did not open until 24-hours later on Sunday night. From the total 12,000 gallons of fuel in the tanker, only about 3,000 were rescued. Samples of concrete from the highway road and under the bridge were taken to determine their structural integrity. Over $250,000 worth of damage were reported.
