Wrong-way Driver Collides with Vehicle on 91 Freeway in Riverside, Killing 2 Women

RIVERSIDE, CA (August 14, 2018) – A person driving the wrong way on the 91 Freeway struck and killed two woman in the early morning hours on Friday. The August 10 crash occurred at roughly 1:45 a.m. between Arlington Avenue and Central Avenue, California Highway Patrol said.
According to Marcelo Llerena, CHP received reports that a small sedan was traveling west in the lanes that head eastbound. Three minutes after the initial call came in, authorities received other calls saying the wrong-way vehicle crashed another vehicle head on.
Authorities identified the victims as Ethel Granados, a 74-year-old resident of San Bernardino, and Fatima Granados, a 52-year-old resident of Riverside. Both women died from their injuries. A third person who had been traveling in the car with them, identified only as a man, suffered major injuries. He was taken to a hospital.
Officers arrested the wrong-way driver on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. It is possible that other charges could be made.
The identity of the wrong-way driver was not reported. He was traveling alone in the car he was driving, according to Sgt. Bryan Arendt of the California Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Arendt recommended that drivers do not drive in the left lane when it is late. This is to offer some protection against other drivers who may be driving the wrong way. Arendt said that when impaired drivers get on the freeway and they go the wrong way, they can often travel on what seems like the right side of the road for them.
