Collision Involving DUI Suspect Kills Woman in Woodlake
WOODLAKE, CA (September 21, 2018) – A collision involving a suspected DUI driver killed a woman in Woodlake Thursday night. The crash occurred when a driver attempted to flee police.
According to reports, California Highway Patrol believes Luis Cabrera Ponce, a 23-year-old resident of Woodlake, had been traveling westbound on Avenue 336 in a Chrysler when he saw a Woodlake Police officer. His car was seen speeding on Highway 216 to flee, police said.
Cabrera did not stop at the stop sign where Avenue 336 and Avenue 216 intersect, police said. His vehicle collided with a Nissan that had been heading north on 216. The driver of the Nissan, identified as Elizabeth Marie Ramirez, a 27-year-old resident of Woodlake, died at the accident scene.
Responders took Cabrera to Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were described as major. CHP believe that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. CHP and Woodlake Police were involved in the investigation.
Cabrera was arrested on suspicion of homicide, DUI causing injury, evading a police officer causing death or serious injury, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.
