Driving under the influence can hurt many victims. This irresponsible behavior not only goes on your driving record for years, but it can also cause the emotional distress of many loved ones and family members. When a wrongful death accident or a personal injury incident takes place, victims and families mourn this misfortunate event. One wrong choice can cause years of regret.

On Thursday, September 14, 39-year old Marnie J. Lippincott pleaded guilty to felony charges of driving under the influence. On Dec. 8 of 2011, the Costa Mesa resident crashed her vehicle into a 17-year old pedestrian, leaving the girl critically injured. The 17-year old girl was walking home from school with two other friends when Lippincott, driving recklessly because of the alcohol she consumed, hit the girl. Sadly, the high school student is still suffering from long-lasting brain traumas.

Because of the critical personal injury Lippincott caused, she has a court trial on December7 which will determine her sentence. Currently, she is facing a prison sentence for up to eight years. She also pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license.

Lippincott was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe, going northbound on Irvine Avenue. The three pedestrians were using a crosswalk at Margaret Drive when they were hit by the driver’s big SUV. During the time of the accident, the teenager had to be placed in a medically induced coma for some time. She still suffers from cognitive deficits and seemingly permanent brain injuries.

When police arrived at the scene, Lippincott had a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 when the state’s alcohol level of 0.08 indicates intoxication. Lippincott also had several prescription pills in her system including anti-anxiety, diet, sleeping medication, and methadone. Clearly, this driver was not fit to drive a vehicle.

This type of accident shows the aftermath of what DUI driving can do. Because of her careless choice to get behind the wheel and drive, Lippincott caused the pain and suffering of so many people. The lives of the 17-year old girl’s family are forever changed as they must find other alternatives in helping the teenager. Once a normal girl in pursuit of college, she is now confined to her home as her family helps her.

Drunk driving is frowned upon by society and it is against the law. If you have ever received personal injury from a negligent driver, make sure to consult with a car accident attorney today and fight for your rights.
