WHITTIER, CA (November 16, 2022) – Early in the morning on Wednesday in Whittier, a crash injured twenty-two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruits, five of them critically. The victims were on a training run during the November 16 incident, which occurred on Mills Avenue in the 10600 block, close to Telegraph Road, and near the STAR Explorer Training Academy.
The time was roughly 6:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
No details have been reported on what led to the crash, but reports say a driver hit twenty-two people. The recruits had been on a training run when the crash happened.
Reports say an SUV struck and knocked down a light pole in the area, and ended up on a sidewalk.
Reports do not identify anyone involved in the crash, including their names, ages, genders, and cities of residence.
Reports say five people suffered injuries that were described as critical, four people suffered injuries described as moderate, and fourteen people suffered injuries described as minor.
The driver suffered injuries described as minor; the driver has also not been identified.
Investigators are working to understand the crash, including how and why it happened.
