Innocent Driver Dies During Police Pursuit of Suspect in Whittier
WHITTIER, CA (February 19, 2019) – An innocent driver was killed Monday morning in Whittier when a suspect tried to flee police pursuit. The February 18 accident occurred at Wardman Street and Newlin Avenue.
The time was roughly a bit after 11:00 a.m
Reports say an officer witnessed an alleged road rage incident. The officer tried to pull the driver over, the Whittier Police Department said, in the vicinity of Greenleaf Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. The suspect driver would not stop, and police began pursuit that traveled through Uptown Whittier’s city streets, according to John Scoggins. Scoggins is an officer with Whittier Police.
Police said that the suspect tried to ram into three patrol vehicles while the pursuit was taking place. The patrol vehicles had to evade the suspect vehicle to avoid a crash.
A short while after the chase began, the suspect rammed into a vehicle at Wardman Street and Newlin Avenue, reports say. The vehicle the suspect had been driving caught fire. The suspect left the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers apprehended the suspect.
According to Scoggins, responders transported the suspect and the driver of the other vehicle to a hospital. Police said the driver of the other vehicle died in the hospital. His identity, including his name, age, and city of residence has not been reported.
The suspect was reported to be in a condition that is stable. He was identified as Kevin Vargas, 34 years old and a resident of Santa Fe Springs. He faces charges that include suspicion of evading police and assault with a deadly weapon, reports say.
