Man Struck and Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver in Whittier
WHITTIER, CA (April 15, 2019) – Florencio Alonso, Jr. was struck and killed while walking in South Whittier early in the morning on Sunday by a driver suspected of DUI. The April 14 accident occurred on Carmenita Road, near Lakeland Avenue and to the south of it, in an area of the county that is unincorporated.
The time was roughly 12:25 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say Alonso had been walking across the road when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, described as Toyota. According to Officer N. Hughes, who is with the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Fe Springs office, the person driving the vehicle was identified at Sary Tuy, 36 years old and a resident of Norwalk.
Alonso died at the accident site, according Larry Dietz. Dietz is a lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Alonso was 30 years old and a resident of Whittier.
Authorities arrested Tuy on suspicion of felony drunk driving after determining that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
