Woman Killed in S-R 78 Head-on Crash in Vista Involving Suspected DUI Driver
VISTA, CA (January 4, 2021) – On Sunday night, a head-on crash in Vista killed a woman. The January 3 incident occurred on State Route 78, near Sycamore Ave. and to the east of it.
The time was roughly a little before 10:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle–described as a Toyota Matrix–had been heading west on SR-78, and another vehicle–described as a Toyota Tacoma–which had been traveling the wrong way, collided with it. The Toyota pickup truck had been heading east in the westbound lane, and going at a fast speed, according to reports received by the California Highway Patrol.
Responders arrived and worked to free each driver from the wreckage of the vehicles. They transported the two people to Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center.
The person driving the Matrix was pronounced deceased in the hospital. She was identified only as a resident of Vista, 24 years old. Her name has not been reported.
The person driving the pickup truck suffered injuries that were described as serious. He was identified as a resident of Carlsbad, 36 years old. His name has not been reported.
Reports say that authorities suspect the driver of the pickup truck was driving under the influence when the crash occurred.
Investigators are continuing their work on the crash.
