The protests and protests-against-protests have made big headlines involving Chick-fil-A. The fast food restaurant, famous for its Southern style chicken sandwiches, has voiced its opinion on gay marriage, leading activists and loyal customers to speak out for or against Chick-fil-A.

On Friday, August 3, a Chick-Fil-A location in Torrance was found vandalized. One side of a Chick-fil-A wall has been found with the phrase “Tastes Like Hate” with a small cow painted to the side of it. The phrase was written in child-like script to mirror the “Eat Mor Chiken” slogan the chicken restaurant is famous for. This graffiti had appeared to have happened overnight. Police officers still do not know who the graffiti artists were.

The vandalism was a response to the traditional marriage view the Chick-fil-A president, Dan Cathy, announced on an online publication. On Wednesday, August 1, a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” was held where customers who support Dan Cathy’s comment came into a nearby Chick-fil-A restaurant and purchased a meal. As a response to the appreciation day, supporters of gay rights held a campaign called “National Same-Sex Kiss Day at Chick-fil-A”. Participants would go into the store and kiss a partner of the same gender as a way to show Chick-fil-A their support of gay rights.

The Chick-fil-A appreciation day held on Wednesday had reportedly broken sales records for the store. It was former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee, who propelled the movement and encouraged Christians and traditional family supporters to flock to Chick-fil-A to show Dan Cathy their support.

Since Cathy’s remark on same-sex marriage, the privately-held chain has been receiving numerous criticisms and controversy. The comment was made on July 16 when a Southern Baptist publication quoted the restaurant president talking about the biblical definition of a family unit. Since then, everything has spiraled into debates, protests, and support.

Bluntly Christian, the restaurant closes on Sundays and has always publicized their religious beliefs. It is only recently that individuals have been attacking the restaurant’s religious standpoint. Places such as Chicago, Washington, and San Francisco proclaimed that Chick-fil-A will no longer be allowed at their area. This also has caused a stir-up as people argue whether or not a business can be prohibited at a region solely because of their political or religious point of view.

The recent vandalism on the Southern Californian Chick-fil-A is evidence that many people have opposing views. However, this is not cause to act up and destroy property. Riots and demonstrations should never be violent and should not have to cause harm to anybody else.
