Man Killed While Walking in Van Nuys by Suspected Hit-and-run Street Racer
VAN NUYS, CA (November 5, 2019) – Neri Ramirez Chalo was killed Friday night while walking in Van Nuys by a suspected hit-and-run driver who is alleged to have been street racing. The November 1 incident occurred on Sepulveda Boulevard, near Hatteras Street.
The time was roughly 10:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Reports say Chalo had began walking across the road and seemed to see two vehicles that were approaching fast. Reports say he began to run and got out of the way of the first vehicle. The second vehicle hit Chalo.
Responders pronounced Chalo deceased at the incident site.
According to reports, investigators think the driver who is suspected of striking Chalo and leaving the scene is Roberto Ocampo, 21 years old and a resident of North Hills.
According to Josh Wade, who is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, an Infiniti G37 was later found in the area of the crash that Ocampo was believed to have driven during the incident.
The other driver involved in the alleged street-racing incident has not been described. Surveillance video from cameras located in the vicinity of the crash recorded two vehicles that were racing on the street, according to Wade. The video helped investigators find the Infinit.
