A woman and her unborn baby were killed Thursday in a car crash in Winnetka.
The accident took place before 5:30 p.m. at Corbin Avenue at Hart Street in the city of Winnetka in Southern California.
The woman, identified as Sandra Escobedo, and her unborn baby, which was believed to be about 6-7 months old in the womb, died at Northridge Hospital after being transported there immediately for care and medical attention following the terrible accident.
Officials said Daniel Magdaleno Alvarez, who could possibly be Escobedo’s husband, was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. His condition was unknown but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening at the time.
Authorities ruled out drinking as a cause but said the husband apparently was driving recklessly, whether or not he was drunk or inebriated. He was also unlicensed. He reportedly made an illegal U-turn before it was safe to do so.
Police said they were going to arrest Alvarez.
Andrea Fujii, reporting for KCAL9, spoke to eyewitness Gus Mendoza.
“She was pregnant and bleeding out of her ears and her mouth and when they finally took her out of the car, there was blood all over her stomach. It was a horrible thing to see,” said Mendoza.
The driver of the other vehicle was not cited. He had minor injuries.
It is unclear who was completely at fault for the accident, but it is clear that the victim’s husband had a major hand in the collision’s cause. More information is needed to ascertain the definite cause of the accident.
