Two drunk drivers collided with each other then crashed into a construction crew on the northbound 405 Freeway on Sunday, July 22. Because two negligent drivers decided to take control of the wheel though they were intoxicated, two wrongful death accidents resulted. Now, families of the two victims must cope with their lost relatives and find sense during this inexplicable mess.
Two road workers were killed when the vehicles collided into their construction site. Ramon Lopez, 56, and Ricardo Zamora, 58, were identified in the coroner’s office as two victims in this horrible accident. A third worker was also part of the accident. He was rushed to Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center and treated for moderate injuries.
Yocio Jonathan Gomez, 23, was driving a blue Ford Explorer when he rear ended Stephen Christopher Caserta, 43, who was driving a black SUV Lexus RX-350. Apparently, Caserta was slowing down when he saw the construction zone but Gomez kept going and accidentally rear-ended Caserta. This caused the Lexus to lose control and spin into the construction zone, striking the workers. Gomez’s car had overturned after the collision. The crash happened in the middle of the night at about 3:35 a.m.
The paramedics immediately arrived on the scene to help both drivers. At the hospital, both Gomez and Caserta were arrested on suspicion that that were driving under the influence. Medical statuses of the two drivers have not been released yet. However, the two men will be charged with DUIs and have a possible charge of involuntary manslaughter because of the deaths of two construction workers.
The 405 north remained closed until 2 p.m. at the South Bay Curve. An investigation team were surveying the wrecks and looking over the scene to verify the facts of the incident. There were only two lanes open on the 405 near the Artesia Boulevard off ramp as a result of the accident. Traffic was backed up for hours.
Ramon Lopez’s daughter, Maureen Lopez, spoke up about her father’s wrongful death accident. She spoke of her father’s great characteristics and how he was always taking care of his family. The words of Lopez’s daughter should remind drivers out on the road to be responsible and careful. Driving while intoxicated is against the law and very irresponsible. Because of the action of two negligent men, the lives of two male workers were taken. Families are grieving for the loss of their loved ones. There was no reason for anyone to be killed that day.
