Man Walking on 55 Freeway in Tustin Hit and Killed
TUSTIN, CA (October 4, 2018) – A man who was walking Tuesday morning on the 55 Freeway in Tustin died after being hit by a vehicle.
The accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, a bit south of 17th Street, Florentino Olivera said. Olivera is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
The time was roughly a bit after 5:40 a.m.
Reports were made to officers that a man was on the freeway, walking in between the fast lanes and the carpool lane. Olivera said that a Honda Accord hit the pedestrian before officers could reach him.
Authorities pronounced the pedestrian—who was later identified as Vincent Shaw, a 38-year-old resident of Compton—deceased at the accident scene. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Vehicles had to slow owing to the deadly accident, and a few minutes later, another crash occurred that involved several vehicles. Reports say that responders took two people who suffered minor injuries to the hospital.
Investigators are examining the details of the first accident that involved the pedestrian to determine if it was a suicide.
