Train Strikes Pickup Truck in Oceanside, Injuring Driver
OCEANSIDE, CA (April 3, 2020) – Late in the afternoon on Thursday, a driver was seriously injured when his vehicle was struck by a train in Oceanside. The April 2 incident occurred in the vicinity of South Meyers Street and Cassidy Street.
The time was roughly 5:05 p.m., Deputy J. Burk said. Burk is with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a pickup truck—went onto the train tracks. An Amtrak train, which had been going 60 miles per hour and heading south, approached the truck. According to reports, the operator of the train blared a warning from the train’s horn before the pickup truck went into the railroad crossing and onto the tracks.
The train was not able to avoid a collision with the truck.
Responders arrived and worked to extricate the driver from the truck. Responders transported the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital by airlift. The types of injuries he suffered, and current condition, are not known.
The identity of the driver, including his name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.
It is not known if anyone on the train was hurt. Investigators are working to collect information and details regarding the crash to understand what circumstances contributed to it.
