Repeat DUI Offender Charged with Murder in Gruesome Hit-and-Run in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 3, 2025) — Tomice Lee Fryman Jr., a 51-year-old man with a history of DUI convictions has been charged with murder following a horrific hit-and-run crash that left body parts and debris scattered for half a mile along Westside Parkway (Highway 58), according to court records and Bakersfield police.
Tomice Lee Fryman Jr. Was Arraigned With Multiple Felony Accounts
Tomice Lee Fryman Jr. was arraigned Tuesday on multiple felony counts, including second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run causing death, and driving with a suspended license stemming from a prior DUI. A deputy public defender entered not guilty pleas on Fryman’s behalf. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on May 14.
The deadly crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the Mohawk Street off-ramp. Bakersfield police described a grisly scene marked by scattered body parts, shattered glass, and vehicle debris across approximately half a mile of the eastbound lanes. Authorities closed the roadway for several hours while conducting an extensive investigation.
Fryman Didn’t Turn Himself In Until At Least 9 Hours After The Horrific Collision
Later that day, around 3:30 p.m., investigators located Fryman’s damaged Hyundai sedan on Stockdale Highway. He turned himself in to authorities around 6 p.m., nearly nine hours after the fatal collision. Due to the time gap, it remains unclear whether Fryman was under the influence at the time of the crash.
Fryman has a lengthy criminal record, including two prior DUI convictions, raising renewed concern over the dangers posed by repeat DUI offenders.
The case remains under investigation.
