Redlands Teen Passenger Killed in Crash; Hit-and-run Driver is Arrested
REDLANDS, CA (June 2, 2021) – A teen who had been traveling as a passenger was killed in a crash early in the morning on Sunday in Redlands. The person who had been driving the vehicle is alleged to have fled the crash site. He was later arrested in the May 31 incident.
Reports say a vehicle–described as a Honda Civic–was attempting to turn onto West Colton Avenue at the West Redlands Boulevard intersection. Authorities suspect the vehicle was going at a fast speed when it smashed into a light pole.
The time was roughly 2:30 a.m., Redlands Police said.
According to authorities, the driver–later identified as Austin Jesse Garcia, 21 years old and a resident of San Bernardino–ran from the crash site.
Responders arrived and found a passenger in the vehicle was killed in the crash. The victim was identified only as 16 years old. The victim’s family has not been identified in reports.
Investigators found Garcia after receiving information that a person with injuries that may have been crash related was admitted to St. Bernardine’s Hospital, located in San Bernardino. The hospital is roughly 10 miles from the scene of the crash, reports say.
Authorities arrested Garcia on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence, and vehicular manslaughter.
